Tiger Tattoo Designs

tiger tattoo design
Tiger tattoo design

Tigers, weighing in at between 250 and 600 pounds are the largest member of the cat family, with the Bengal tiger being the most common amng the species.  There are other species with varying color and stripe patterns.  Some species, most notably the Sumatran tiger are on the endangered species list, with a few species already extinct.

Both men and women are getting tiger tattoos inked these days.  The tiger is arguably the most tattooed animal in the world, which may be due to its incredible beauty and unique symbolism.

Tiger and dragon tattoo design

In Japanese tattoos, the tiger is sometimes partnered with a dragon to symbolize heaven and earth: yin and yang.  To the right here is a great example of that combination.  This tattoo design was very remarkably done by the artist and obviously is very symbolic and meaningful to this young lady.

In China the tiger is considered the king of all beasts (not the lion) and represents powerful energy.  In certain areas of China the tiger is considered the God of Wealth.

Deeply rooted in Asian culture, tiger tattoo designs are popular in both Eastern and Western tattoo genres, and have a rich history in myths and legends in many cultures. Tigers are associated with power, ferocity, passion and sensuality, beauty and speed, cruelty and wrath.

Angelina Jolie getting her tiger tattoo inked by hand

Angelina Jolie had this 12-inch long, 8-inch wide Bengal tiger tattoo on her lower back done in Bangkok in 2004, during a 2 hour session by tattoo artist Sompong Kanhphai who also blessed it by chanting an ancient hymn.

It took two hours to complete the tattoo because Angelina opted for a traditional Thai tattooing style. Purely by hand, the tattoo artist maneuvered a long needle that glides inside a hollow tube, delicately inking the skin manually.

This tiger tattoo accompanies an iroquois design, a tribal dragon design, as well as a window design which she covered up the by tiger's tail.

Tiger and dragon tattoo design

The tattoo here is another example of the tiger being paired with the dragon tattoo design, symbolizing heaven and earth.  This artwork was also very craftily inked by a very talented artist.

Tigers, like many other large and dangerous creatures, have a myriad of symbolic values that make them a perfect tattoo for many different reasons. Combining menace, danger, power, strength and beauty into a single symbol, tigers can represent many different things to different people and have a rich history in many cultures in India, China and South East Asia that connects them to religions, myths and even historical figures.

Cherry Blossom Tattoo Designs

Cherry blossom tattoo design

The cherry blossom truly is a very sexy, feminine tattoo design, that when inked properly by a talented artist is really very remarkable to look at and admire. You can guarantee that the folks admiring your artwork will initially only see it as sexy artwork, but when you explain its symbolism, the tattoo becomes even that much more sexy and attractive, and makes you a more interesting individual to talk to.

Cherry blossom tattoos are some of the most popular tattoo designs for women today.  There is no question that this design is very eye appealing and very feminine and sexy.

Full back cherry blossom tattoo design

The symbolism of the cherry blossom is very deeply rooted in Asian culture, with varying meanings among the Japanese and Chinese cultures.

In Chinese cultural tradition, the cherry blossom typically represents feminine beauty and sexuality and often holds an idea of power or feminine dominance.  Also in this culture the cherry blossom is a symbol of love.

Japanese cherry blossom tattoo design

The Japanese cultural symbolism is wholly different than the Chinese symbolism, specifically in that the Japanese symbolism has more relevance to the transience of life itself.  The cherry blossom is a very fragile and short lived flower and when associated with the fragility of one's relatively fragile and short life span, we see the significance of the symbolism.

This image was selected here to show that in many cherry blossom tattoo designs you will see the petals falling off, demonstrating its fragile and short-lived existence.

Really, this is all reflective of the notion that we should all celebrate the time we have been given on this earth and live that life to its fullest.

Unfortunately, there is also the realization that the brief existence of the blossoms represent imminent death as well and is not so well likened to a positive outcome.  As in everything, a tattoo design is what the symbolism means to you individually.

Beautifully executed cherry blossom design

Now seems like a good time to bring up the tattoo artist into all of this.  This style of design demands an experienced tattoo artist who is also familiar with the symbolism involved in Asian culture. The design is beautiful, sexy and attractive and the talented, knowledgeable artist will be able to converse with you on a higher plain if you both understand the cherry blossom symbolism.  It is very vital to have a good rapport with your artist so that you get exactly the tattoo design that you had envisioned when you made the decision to get a design inked.

Beautiful flower tattoo design

Beautiful flower tattoo design
My friend Julie Villani of Tattoos For Women, sent me this Email recently. I had signed up for her Email newsletter to keep up with what she had going on. Julie is very sharp and has a lot of wisdom to share regarding choosing a tattoo design you wont later regret.

I wrote an article about this same subject just a few days ago that I haven't shared here yet, but I thought Julie's wisdom would do well to preface the upcoming post, "How To Pick A Tattoo Design You Won't Regret."

If I said "tattoos are for life", would you agree?

If you went out and just chose a tattoo on impulse, or worse - price, you may quickly regret getting inked.

It seems crazy to me that some people don't really think much about their body art choice. I mean, it's going to be with you the rest of your life! It's not like make-up you can just wash off at the end of the day, or clothing you can change as fashion changes. It's with you for life!

So you want to make sure that you'll end up with a gorgeous piece of art that you'll always be happy with.

If you've already been inked, I hope you're very happy with your choice.

Having a tattoo can sometimes even change how you feel about yourself - and you want that to be in a good way.

Think about how you might feel about your tattoo into the future. What might it say about you as a mum - or a grandma even? I know it's hard to think that far in advance, but your tattoo's still going to be with you then.

Sexy tattoo design with tremendous symbolism

Or how about your working life? Who knows what type of work you might want to do in the future. You don't want your tattoo to affect your chances of getting your dream job, when a bit of forward thinking could have you placing your tattoo in a more discreet position.

Another thing I recommend to women is that you think about if for a few weeks. Do your research (read my book :-) ), and if you still want to go ahead, you haven't lost anything, but gained a whole lot of insight.

That way you can be 100% sure it's the right thing for you. You'll be confident about your decision, rather than unsure, or confused, or even scared.

And if you're still not sure, put it off for six months, then come back to the idea and go from there.
After all, you're an adult making this decision. Just ask yourself why you're doing it. Don't let anyone else influence you. If you can't decide, then you're not ready.

When you do decide to get your body art, make sure that you choose the right tattoo for you - one that is meaningful to you, that looks good and is an extension of your character. That way you'll always be happy with your decision.

Japanese Dragon Tattoo Designs

japanese dragon tattoo design
Japanese dragon tattoo design

The attraction of the Japanese dragon tattoo design, apart from its awesome beauty, is that is represents good luck and the source of wealth. The Japanese dragon tattoo has the meaning of freedom and of being fearless, both qualities that are admirable. Some characteristics of a Japanese dragon tattoo are that it doesn’t have any wings, is serpentine, has a head of a camel, paws of a tiger, claws of an eagle, scales of a carp (koi), and can have a jewel under its chin. Tending to be more slender, the Japanese dragon is associated with the sea, the clouds or the heavens. Japanese dragon tattoos have three claws as opposed to the Chinese dragon tattoo design which display five claws.

Six forms of the Japanese Dragon:

Sui-Riu – the king dragon said to be the controller of the rain; when in pain, rains red, the color of blood.
Han-Riu – the largest dragon, and has a striped body with nine different colors.
Ri-Riu – this dragon has amazing eyesight and can see for 100 miles.
Ka-Riu – a small dragon, only seven feet long , fiery red in color.
Fuku-Riu – a popular dragon because it is the dragon of good luck.
Hai-Riyo – a dragon bird, it is an advanced dragon form and evolved out of Chinese mythology.

Dragons are fascinating creatures, as are most things based in mythology and folklore. When it comes to a dragon tattoo design, your preferences and creativity are at the forefront because there is no concern over making the design look realistic. Japanese dragon tattoos are lively and exciting designs.

Tattoos and body art are very popular ways to express one's individuality and style.  These factors and many others will determine what style of Japanese dragon tattoo design you select to have inked on your body.  Having said that, no matter what tattoo design you are seeking, you need to make sure it is of very high quality and not just one that everybody on the internet is selecting from.  I have reviewed several Japanese tattoo design galleries on the internet and have selected Chopper-Tattoo as among the very elite tattoo galleries.

Nautical Star Tattoo Designs and Their Meanings

The nautical star tattoo design is easily one of the most popular styles of star tattoos. Long used as an image for protection and guidance through life, nautical star tattoos are today assigned many different meanings by their wearers:
  • Military meanings
  • Gay and lesbian symbolism
  • Punk rock groups
  • Personal interpretations
nautical star tattoo designs
Nautical star tatoo design

The design itself is a five-pointed star with each point divided into two symmetric sections, of which each of these sections are colored with alternating light and dark colors.

Military and/or Navy Symbolism

Nautical star tattoos are said to be one of the earliest tattoo images in "modern" times. The design, well over a century old was worn by sailors to signify navigation by following the North Star, known as Polaris. Of all of the stars in the night sky used for navigation, it is the North Star that is relied upon most to return sailors home. Because it seems to be relatively stationary over the North Pole with the other stars moving around it, its fixed position in the sky is an essential reference point for navigation. In today's nautical charts, the direction North (zero degrees) on a compass is marked with a five-pointed star.
While other maritime tattoo symbols, such as the anchor and sparrow, find their inspiration in different ports of call or are used to commemorate the voyage and its perils, the nautical star is a much more hopeful symbol of being able to find one's way. By extension, it has also been used specifically as a symbol of the return home and sometimes the luck that is needed to reach that destination.

Other branches of the military have since adopted the belief that the nautical star keeps them pointed in the right direction and aids in their safe return home to their family and friends.

Gay and Lesbian Symbolism

In the middle part of the 20th century, particularly in the '40s and '50s, when it was still taboo for women to be lesbians, there were symbols that were used to indicate sexual orientation in women. The most popular of these was the nautical star tattoo inked somewhere easily hidden and also easily unhidden. The most common spot for this tattoo was on the wrist that could be easily hidden by a watch, clothing and other accessories. During the day the watch was on but at night when you there was a more likelihood of meeting like-minded people, the watch was removed so others could see it. Instead of taking a guess at a stranger's orientation and possibly embarrassment, homosexuals would look for symbols like the nautical and know that their secret was safe and was talking to a like-minded individual.
More recently, MANY lesbian women wear a silver ring around their middle to finger to symbolize their sexual disposition.

Punk Rockers

The punk movement adorns the nautical star tattoo design "because we can." The movement traces its origins back to Sailor Jerry, who inked thousands of sailors with "cool" designs. Historically, Sailor Jerry was one the most iconic and famous tattoo artists who ever lived. The thing that remains constant here is that this group also believes the nautical star provides guidance in their lives, pointing them on their own exclusive path.

Personal Interpretations

The nautical star tattoo design clearly shows that when the same powerful symbol is used again and again over decades of time it has taken on very different meanings for different groups. So all of those that you see sporting a nautical star tattoo might not all have the same interpretation of its symbolism.
Whatever that interpretation is, the fact is we all have our own ideas about what things symbolize to our own unique lives.

While the nautical star is regarded as a symbol of finding one's own path in life and finding ones way home safely, it obviously is a much revered and popular tattoo design in today's society. Now that you have a more broad based knowledge of this symbol, look around you and see if you now notice that more people than you would have realized are inked with nautical star tattoo designs.

Have a great day and shoot for the stars in your own endeavors.

Nautical Star Tattoo Designs

star tattoo designs
nautical star with sun tattoo design
The nautical star tattoo design here is pretty damn sharp.  As you can see, this nautical star is inset in the sun.  If this isn't a navigationally based, historically derived tattoo design then one doesn't exist.

Sailors tattooed these designs on there bodies to symbolically guide themselves home safely to their families and friends from their months at sea, and additionally for the feeling of protection that bearing one had.

You see, the nautical star is symbolic of the North Star (known properly as Polaris), which shown bright it the northern sky on a clear night.  The particular design above is representative not only of Polaris, which is your northern marker, but also of the sunrise after a long night tracking Polaris.  I have been advised that the sun rises in the East, so come morning I should have another marker to navigate by; (assuming all things aren't upside down and I am looking through a glass bottom boat that got rotated 180 degrees)....LOL...That was uncalled for but I couldn't help it.

nautical star tattoo designs
Celtic nautical star tattoo design

The design shown here to the right is a nice twist on the nautical tattoo design in that the star has a bit of a Celtic design flair to it with the interwoven strands.  It is also very well designed.

The nautical star is a five-pointed star, the points of which are split in half and filled with an alternating color (usually black-red or black-white), creating a 3d illusion.
nautical star tattoos
shooting star nautical tattoo design

This is a very interesting tattoo design idea.  The shooting star tattoo has a few meanings, but one meaning that is fairly consistent is that of the bearer's desire to shoot for the stars in their pursuit, fulfillment, and happiness in life..in other words, to give it all they've got to realize their dreams.

In this artwork, we not only see the shooting star, and it's relative significance, but also the nautical star in a navigational role to guide one's path in life.

This is only my interpretation of this design and could mean something totally different to the owner of this very interesting design.

I keep saying that I will have posts to expand upon previous posts, and I am working on it.  Time and opportunity for research are bit taxing right now, but I haven't forgot.

If any of you saw the previous star tattoo design post, I mentioned something about a star design being questionable.  No one posted a comment, but the reason I mentioned that is with a five-point star design, if the leading point is pointing down instead of up, it is said to be indicative of the devil and/or witchcraft.

Dragon Tattoo Designs - Part 1

dragan tattoo designs
defending the dragon

"It was said the only way to journey past a dragon was to answer it's riddles."

I had to share my yucks with you.  Honestly, I almost fell out laughing at that statement.

OK..I was researching dragon tattoo designs and came across the above nonsense. Put yourself in this situation..The dragon asks "what color is the moon?"  You say off-white.  The dragon says "no, it's an off-yellow, and since you have failed to answer the riddle correctly, you are looking good for my midnight snack."

Lower back dragon tattoo design

A dragon tattoo design symbolizes many different things depending on the culture. For the most part, the dragon tattoo design is symbolic of power, courage, strength, and willpower.

I will expound on this topic more thoroughly in a later post. For now though I had to throw that at ya.

Sexy Lower Back Tattoo Designs For Women

lower back tattoo designs
sexy lower back flower tatoo design

A tattoo is a permanent part of a person's body and someone who is bold and daring might want a unique and sexy lower back tattoo design. 20% of women aged 18-50 have a tattoo on their lower back. The lower back is a very curvaceous and sensual part of a woman's body and therefore the lower-back is an excellent location to put a unique and sexy tattoo design, as this can be easily displayed by the style of clothing a woman may choose. In the same manner, this location for a tattoo can be easily hidden for occasions such as work and other formal settings.  As we are well aware of, there is derogatory stigmata attached to a lower back tattoo design which is often labeled a "tramp stamp."

So, is it true that women who wear lower back tattoos are more promiscuous than those without? Sure, some of them.  However, there are no particular studies that bear this rumor as true.  Is a woman who wears a lower cut blouse more promiscuous than a woman who is buttoned all the way up the neck?  NO!!  It's the more modest of women who might surprise you.  That is not to say that it takes a bit of daring to sport a lower back tattoo design.

sexy lower back tattoo designs
angel wing/cross lower back tattoo design

The design to the right here obviously has spiritual considerations to this woman. It would be interesting to find out what this tattoo design is inspired by.

I was introduced to a woman who had a rose/ivy tattoo design on her lower back. Her sister introduced us. This woman had another tattoo on her shoulder blade that was in plain view due to a strappy top she wore that night. I asked about her butterfly tattoo and as we continued talking, she told me she had another tattoo, but she said it was a bit personal and I couldn't see it at that time. Well, long story short, we ended up together for about a year, but I didn't see this rose/ivy tattoo until a couple of dates later..Moral of story?? She wasn't a tramp with a stamp!!  Do not assume because you might make an 'ass' of 'u' and 'me' .  Well, that is how I was taught anyway.  Self confidence is an amazing character trait that we all should strive for.

lower back tattoos
1 Corinthians 13

The lower back is an excellent place to ink a tattoo design because the area is large enough horizontally and vertically that the options in design are virtually endless. Whatever design can be imagined will surely be able to find a home on the lower back.  Make it sharp, cuz it will be there for a while.

I always prefer designs that are well thought out by the wearer/owner and have a story and meaning behind them. This alone makes the artwork tremendously more attractive to the observer because there is an interesting tale to tell.

Arschgeweih

There’s a German slang term for lower back tattoos — Arschgeweih — which means “ass antlers”.  This term is probably derived from the fact that these tattoos have a barbed style and look like antlers when they stick out from underneath low-rise jeans or below a crop top, which young ladies seem to favour these days.

Prison Tattoos and Their Meanings

Hispanic prison inmate

Prison tattooing is the practice of creating and displaying tattoos in a prison environment. They are often used to portray gang membership, prison status, family bonds, spiritual beliefs and are often used as a form of code and have hidden meanings. Tattooing is forbidden in most prisons and therefore is done in secret, with makeshift tattoo equipment. Within the expanding prison system, tattoos are taken seriously by the inmates and their guards alike. Tattoos obtained while locked up in prison have special significance both to the prisoners themselves as well as back on the streets.

Methods of Tattooing in Prison
There are two standard type of prison tattoo pistols, the spinner and the relay. The relay pistol is much better than the spinner rig-up and is now more widely used. An inmate breaks down his most prized possession, a radio, and removes the transistor. The thin copper wire is then removed which is wrapped around a screw which provides an automatic relay when powered up. The inmate must then somehow acquire bristles from a wire brush from maintenance, and sharpen them to provide the needle. The cylinder is made from a quality mechanical pencil and the armature bar is made with a piece of flexible pallet band and dime size magnet. The tattoo gun is then powered by the transistor of another radio. So owning one of these tattoo "pistols" is quite costly and in prison, "money" can be hard to come by.

Obviously without this equipment, the ole pick and poke method with some type of pin works too.

Prison tattoo ink recipe  (from someone who's been there)
Get a metal container (a cut in half soda can is best) and put baby oil and cotton into the can. You then will need a flat piece of metal that can be put over the opening of the can, without covering it. Burn the baby oil and cotton allowing the smoke to hit the metal sheet and blacken it as darkly as possible. You will then scrape all of the black powder off, and repeat. You want to use a credit card or something similar to do this, as razors and other metal scrapers might leave shards in the powder. Put your tattoo powder in a small container, a toothpaste cap is what I recommend, and fill the cap about halfway. Then add a couple drops of clear, scentless, shampoo. Stir thoroughly. Your completed ink should have a pen's inks consistency, or maybe slightly thicker. To thin your ink, add shampoo, and to thicken it up, add more powder.
Some inmates will simply use the ink out of a pen. There are various methods of concocting an ink recipe and they have all probably been used at one time or another.

Due to the lack of proper equipment and sterile environments in prison, the tattooing in prison poses health risks, such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis. However, prisoners are ominously aware of this and take as many precautions as are possible given the conditions under which they are operating.

Many inmates in prison who do tattooing are very talented artists. Having quality tattooing skills in prison is a very lucrative skill to possess. Seasoned tattoo artists in prison stand a far better chance of making "money" than say the inmate who is trying to sling drugs behind the scenes. They also gain the admirable respect of other prisoners as well as the correctional officers themselves. Unlike other mind bending activities such as gossip or gang related stimuli the tattoo artist occupies his mind with skin and art.

"mi vida loca"
Some Prison Tattoo Meanings in North America

Three dots arranged as a triangle - this design is most commonly found between the prisoner's forefinger and thumb. The design stands for "mi vida loca," which means "my crazy life."
Teardrop tattoo - this design is worn by the eye. It indicates the wearer has killed someone or that the person had a friend killed in prison.
Shamrock - this design is worn anywhere on the body and is often found on those belonging to the Aryan Brotherhood. In this case, the shamrock often also includes the number 12, with the 1 standing for "A" and the 2 standing for "B."
Ace of spades - Worn anywhere on the body, this design is mostly worn by those belonging to either the Aco Town or Asian Boyz gang. The A, which is often placed in the middle of the spade, is meant to symbolize Asian while the spade symbolizes thievery.
The number 13 - this tattoo indicates membership with the Mara Salvatrucha 13 gang.
The number 14 - this tattoo indicates membership with the Nuestra Familia, which is a prison gang. This gang is affiliated with the Nortenos, a street gang.
Area codes - many gang members use the area code to their neighborhood as a tattoo, though this can become outdated as area codes are changed.
Clock with no hands - most commonly placed on the upper arm, this tattoo symbolizes "doing time."
Spider web - generally found on the elbow, this tattoo is used by white supremacists to demonstrate that they have severely injured or killed one of their "opponents." The design is also commonly found on people that have been in prison.
Clock faces without hands - doing time
Tombstones with numbers - the years they were inside
Tombstones with numbers and RIP - mourning the death of a friend
Face of female crying - has someone on the outside waiting
SWP - supreme white power
100% pure - pure white or anglo
Cell window with sun or bird showing - waiting to get out

Other countries such as Russia, Australia, France, UK, China, and others all have prisons with inmates who bear tattoos with significant meanings.  As a matter of fact, Russia and it's former republics have a very elaborate array of tattoo meanings.

One very major point inmates consider while getting tattooed is getting caught.  If an inmate gets caught getting a tattoo, they are subject to a penalty of 15 days of solitary confinement.  Being suspected of getting a tattoo as perhaps is indicated by the reddening of the skin where a fresh tattoo has been inked will still bring repercussions, such as being charged with tattooing.  But hey, if you are doing life in prison without the possibility of parole does this really concern you a whole lot?

The concept of prison tattoos is hardly a modern one.  There is evidence to suggest that prisoners were tattooed as early as Egyptian times.  As with many of the tattoos worn by prisoners today, these tattoos also had significant meaning. For example king or pyramid tattoos were worn by those that were very dangerous, such as assassins, head bosses, and masterminds.

Star Tattoo Designs

This is a really sexy lower back star tattoo design.  Star tattoos take on many forms and are very versatile in that they can be small which allows them to be put virtually anywhere on the body.

Belly star tattoo design

The belly star tattoo design shown here looks nice with the belly ring, but one must be careful how to position  the stars.  Depending on how you look at some of the stars, there could be a "dark side" here.

More Striking Celtic Tattoo Designs

celtic cross
Celtic cross w/intricate knotwork

Here is a really intricate Celtic cross design idea depicting the never ending knotwork.  This artwork is just incredible and I can only imagine how many sittings it took the artist ink this tattoo.  It takes a very experienced tattoo artist with a tremendous eye for detail to ink Celtic knotwork.

Celtic designs are very rich in history and folklore.  The early Celts didn't write anything down, therefore, much of their history up to a point was passed along orally through the generations. Many Celtic designs you see today have their roots in the Book of Kells,
which was created by Celtic monks ca. 800 or slightly earlier.

wolf tattoo design
Celtic zoomorphic wolf tattoo design
The original manuscript consisted of the four gospels of the New Testament along with various texts and tables.  The illustrations and other ornamentation surpass that of other Insular Gospel volumes in extravagance and complexity.  Figures of humans, animals, and mythical beasts, along with Celtic knots and interwoven patterns in vibrant colors grace the Book of Kells pages.

Pictured here you see the continuous knotwork ending with the body and head of a wolf.  If you will notice the wolf has the strand in his mouth not breaking the never ending weave.  Very cool design.

Thistle is the national emblem of Scotland and it is said that just one thistle saved an entire Scottish army.  During the Vikings invasion of Scotland, an enemy warrior stepped on a thistle and cried out in pain, waking the sleeping Scotsmen.

Pictured at right here is another example of the intricate interwoven knotwork prevelant in Celtic tattoo design artistry.
